Gelatin is widely used to make the shells of hard and soft capsules, effectively protecting the capsule contents from light, atmospheric oxygen, pollution and microbial growth, while masking taste and odor.

Hard capsules account for 75% of the gelatin capsule market. Hard capsules, also known as two-piece capsules, consist of two cylindrical shells and a lid. The lid is tightly fitted on the cylinder to form a sealed unit. Hard capsules produced for humans range in size from 0,000 to 5,000 and can be clear or colored. Hard capsules can also be embossed.

Hard capsules are usually filled with powders, granules, pellets and small tablets. Hard capsules can also be filled with liquids and pastes using existing methods of sealing and packaging capsules while maintaining drug safety standards.

Softgel capsules, on the other hand, have a one-piece, sealed, flexible shell, thanks to the fact that gelatin dissolves in hot water and forms a gel when cooled. Softgel capsules can be filled with liquid or semi-solid substances, producing shells of different shapes and colors.

Although softgel capsules account for only about a quarter of the gelatin capsule market, softgel capsules offer significant advantages over many traditional oral dosage forms, including protection of active pharmaceutical ingredients, improved swallowability, and ease of dissolution in gastrointestinal fluids . In addition, human absorption of poorly soluble compounds encapsulated in soft capsules may be higher compared to traditional dosage forms.

Gelatin can be used as a binder or coating for tablets, a lower-cost alternative to capsules. Tablets also offer dose-splitting cuts without the risk of cross-linking.

However, tablets are limited to solid active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients, which dissolve more slowly, are more difficult to formulate, and offer less protection from oxygen and light to the active ingredient. Swallowability is also worse.

As a binder, gelatin can bind powders such as starch, cellulose derivatives, and acacia gum together for the purpose of granulation. Gelatin coating also helps overcome some of the disadvantages of tablets. These include improving swallowability, reducing taste and odor, and helping to protect active pharmaceutical ingredients from the effects of oxygen and light.

In the microencapsulation process, particles or droplets are coated with a gelatin shell to form microcapsules. Its uses include lipophilic vitamins as well as flavors, colors, pesticides, herbicides and carbonless copy paper.

Microencapsulation can provide a variety of benefits, including preventing particles from being degraded by oxygen or light, masking their taste and odor, controlling their release rate, and improving their handling quality.
